We celebrated Owen's 1st Birthday with family and a few friends at Espee Park in Chandler. They have a great shaded playground and a spray pad. It wasn't too unbearable on this day, everyone had a good time. Especially the birthday boy!
First I sent out an Evite that said:
Who can hardly believe a year has passed?
Our Little O has grown so fast!
Join us for snacks, cake and fun,
our very hungry Owen is turning 1!
We'll splash, swing, slide, and play.
Please wear your swimsuit for this special day.

Eric Carle's "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" is one of Owen's (ok, mostly my) favorite books. And if you know Owen, you know this kid can EAT! What a perfect theme! When I had this idea and started to look for pictures of Owen eating, well let's just say there was no shortage of ones to choose from!I ran with the theme by decorating the table with things the caterpillar ate from the book. I typed out the parts of the story to go along with each item. And of course the best party was our Hungry Caterpillar cupcake cake! My friend Jamie did all the frosting work, but I helped bake them and I shaped that little guy. I did however make the Rainbow "Lollipop" Cookies all by myself for the party favors. We had a little candy bar too as favors.
Owen stared at Papa when we first started singing to him. Not quite sure what was going on. He was also having a little trouble attacking his smash cake (the caterpillar's head) because of the fondant. He got the eyes off and chomped away. Once I poked a little whole in the fondant he dug in! He also had so much fun playing in the spray pad. He loves the water, just like his big sister!

Here's the inside of the cupcakes we baked...rainbow! The first time either of us had made these. My batch was more pastel, while Jamie's was more Tie-Dye.
